The Grammar of Sequential Art
Bande dessinée has developed a sophisticated visual language that distinguishes it from other forms of sequential art. This language encompasses not merely drawing styles or narrative techniques, but a complete system of communication that integrates visual and textual elements to create meaning. Understanding this artistic language is crucial to appreciating BD's unique contributions to world culture and its recognition as the ninth art.
At its foundation, BD operates on the principle of the "solidarity" between text and image, a concept articulated by pioneering theorists like Thierry Groensteen. Unlike illustrated books where images supplement text, or wordless picture books where images carry all meaning, BD creates meaning through the dynamic interaction between visual and verbal elements. This interaction occurs at multiple levels: within individual panels, across panel sequences, and throughout entire albums.
