The bentwood chair, perfected by Thonet in the 1850s, revolutionized café seating. Model No. 14 could be mass-produced, shipped flat, and assembled on-site. Its elegant curves and light weight allowed easy rearrangement while maintaining visual harmony. Today's reproductions maintain the essential design, though purists can spot genuine vintage pieces by their subtle irregularities and superior patina.

Marble-topped tables represent café luxury. The cool surface resists stains while providing satisfying solidity. Round tables predominate—they facilitate conversation, maximize seating flexibility, and create better traffic flow than square alternatives. The metal bases, often ornate cast iron, provide stability while allowing close table placement.

Banquette seating along walls maximizes space while creating intimate zones. The deep red or brown leather (or vinyl approximating leather) provides visual warmth against typically neutral walls. These fixed seats establish territorial boundaries—regulars claim specific spots, creating micro-neighborhoods within the café.

Exterior furniture presents different challenges. Rattan chairs must withstand weather while maintaining comfort. The classic French café chair—metal frame with woven plastic seats in primary colors—evolved from practical needs. They stack for storage, resist rain, and create cheerful terraces. The visual clash of bright blues and reds against Parisian gray somehow works, perhaps because it promises warmth and conviviality.
