Punk and New Wave: Anger and Art
The French Punk Explosion
When punk arrived in 1976-1977, France was ready. Economic crisis, youth unemployment, and cultural stagnation created perfect conditions. But French punk differed from its Anglo-American cousins—more artistic, more connected to earlier avant-garde traditions.
Métal Urbain (formed 1976) were arguably Europe's first punk band, contemporaneous with the Sex Pistols. Their synthesizer-driven assault predated industrial music. Songs like "Panik" mixed punk energy with electronic experimentation.
Stinky Toys, featuring future fashion icon Elli Medeiros, brought art school sensibility to punk. Their single "Boozy Creed" was France's first punk release.
Téléphone (1976-1986) became France's biggest rock band by softening punk's edges without losing its energy. Jean-Louis Aubert's nasal voice, Louis Bertignac's guitar heroics, and Corine Marienneau's solid bass created anthems like "Ça (c'est vraiment toi)" and "Un autre monde."
The New Wave Transformation
As elsewhere, punk quickly evolved into new wave, but with French characteristics:
Taxi Girl (1978-1986) epitomized French new wave sophistication. Daniel Darc's doomed romanticism and Mirwais's production created noir atmospheres. "Cherchez le garçon" remains a perfect new wave artifact.
Indochine (formed 1981) started as new wave also-rans but evolved into France's most enduring rock band. Nicolas Sirkis's androgynous appeal and songs like "L'Aventurier" captured teenage alienation across generations.
Rita Mitsouko (1979-2007) brought surrealist humor to new wave. Catherine Ringer's extraordinary voice and Fred Chichin's musical imagination created hits like "Marcia Baïla" that were simultaneously pop and avant-garde.
The Alternative Rock Legacy
French punk/new wave established patterns that continue: - DIY ethics creating independent labels like New Rose Records - Art school connections maintaining high aesthetic standards - Political engagement beyond simple sloganeering - Connection to chanson tradition even while rejecting it
