Nuclear Rhône
The Rhône hosts more nuclear reactors along its banks than any other river in the world. This concentration of atomic power has created unique communities and challenges. In Tricastin, four reactors dominate the landscape, drawing workers from across France and beyond.
The nuclear presence has profoundly shaped local demographics. Engineers from Pakistan work alongside technicians from Morocco, safety inspectors from Romania, and local French staff. The international school in Pierrelatte teaches in five languages, reflecting the global nature of nuclear expertise.
"People think nuclear work is just about technology," reflects Dr. Amara Diop, a physicist from Senegal who works at Cruas. "But it's really about community. We all depend on each other for safety. The Rhône teaches us that—one mistake upstream affects everyone downstream. It makes us careful, responsible."
