The coronation ceremony illustrated Napoleon's genius for political symbolism. By crowning himself rather than allowing Pope Pius VII to perform the act, he demonstrated that his authority came from his own achievements rather than divine appointment. Yet the Pope's presence blessed the new order with religious sanction. Revolutionary symbols appeared alongside imperial regalia, suggesting continuity with 1789 while transcending republican limitations.

The new imperial court combined elements from various sources: Versailles protocol adapted to revolutionary sensibilities, Roman imperial imagery updated for modern circumstances, and entirely new traditions suited to Napoleon's personality and achievements. This synthetic approach characterized the entire imperial system—revolutionary in origins, traditional in forms, autocratic in practice.
