The Classification Maze
Burgundy's hierarchy seems designed to confuse, but follows logic once understood:
Regional (23% of production) - "Bourgogne Rouge" or "Bourgogne Blanc" - Grapes from anywhere in Burgundy - Entry level but can be excellent from good producers
Village (37% of production) - Village name on label (e.g., "Gevrey-Chambertin") - Grapes from anywhere within village boundaries - Sweet spot for quality/price
Premier Cru (34% of production) - Village name + vineyard name - "Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers" - From specific classified vineyards - Major step up in complexity
Grand Cru (1.5% of production) - Vineyard name only (e.g., "Le Chambertin") - 33 vineyards with this status - Burgundy's pinnacle - Prices to match reputation
