A Leadership Philosophy
Eiffel's management style was progressive for his era. He insisted on several principles:
Safety First: At a time when construction deaths were considered inevitable, Eiffel demanded safety measures that seemed excessive to some. Guard rails, safety nets, and mandatory rest breaks were instituted. Workers received hot meals in on-site canteens—unusual for the time.
Fair Wages: Eiffel paid above-market rates and offered bonuses for meeting deadlines without accidents. This attracted the best workers and reduced turnover.
Recognition: Every worker who contributed to the tower's construction received a certificate with their name. Eiffel understood that pride in work came from acknowledgment.
Innovation: Suggestions from any level were welcomed. A riveter's idea for improving joint alignment was implemented as readily as an engineer's calculation refinement.
