New Spiritual Movements

Globalization brings new spiritual options:

Rastafarianism

Though Jamaican-originated, Rastafarianism resonates with French Caribbean youth seeking African identity and colonial resistance.

"Rasta gave me pride in my African heritage when school taught shame," explains Dread Samuel of Guadeloupe. "It connected spirituality to liberation in ways traditional churches didn't."

Buddhism and Eastern Practices

Meditation centers and yoga studios multiply, often blending Eastern practices with Caribbean spirituality.

"Buddhism's non-dualism fits our Creole mentality," suggests teacher Marie-Line Ampigny. "We never believed in strict oppositions anyway."

Neo-African Movements

Some seek to "purify" African practices from syncretism, studying Yoruba, Akan, or Kongolese traditions directly.

"Our ancestors had to hide their gods, but we don't," states Babalawo Jean-Michel Martial. "We can practice openly, connect with Africa directly, heal historical wounds."
