The New Heroes
The immediate post-war years produced heroes who embodied reconstruction's spirit. Jean Robic, winner in 1947, stood just 1.61 meters tall and weighed 60 kilograms. His nickname, "Biquet" (Kid Goat), reflected both his climbing ability and scrappy determination. Neither graceful nor particularly talented, Robic won through sheer willpower, making him perfect symbol for a nation rebuilding through grit rather than resources.
The Regional Champions
Post-war Tours saw resurgence of regional identity within French cycling. Brittany's Jean Robic, the North's Louison Bobet, the Southeast's Raphaël Géminiani—each carried their region's hopes. These rivalries, fierce but respectful, helped heal internal divisions exacerbated by occupation. When riders from previously divided regions worked together in the national team, it demonstrated that France could unite despite recent traumas.
